Ilchester Park Picnic

The team have been preparing for the Picnic in the Park for a few weeks now – putting flyers through doors in the local area and in the local shops and supermarket.
Gemma and Jess did sterling work in organising the group and what we wanted to make sure we captured on the day.

Along with the help of Ed from FACT, and Darren and Liz from DigiEnable, Tref and Andi were our intrepid reporters today, seeking out the stories of what was happening at the Ilchester Park Picnic.

Check out the photos in the post below, but before that, check out the videos the GreenStreets team produced.

Princes TrustTeam 121 Snowdonia Residential

Residential

During our residential week, we stayed in a nicely sized house located in the foothills of the welsh mountains, a picturesque location that was very soothing on a tired mind!

Upon arrival we were thrown in to the action immediately by being asked to gorge walk down one of the welsh valleys which most definitely wet the appetite! During our descent we first made our way down a slippery array of rocks until finally we were asked to sit and slide down the valley, which resulted in a complete drenching.

The second day proved to be very enjoyable as we kayaked towards the spot were we were to do some rock climbing and a bit of abseiling, followed by a boat-based game of dodge ball. The second day was a fun day were I thought the team began to bond nicely due to the teamwork required in rock climbing and abseiling etc.

On our third day we climbed up a steep mountain before exploring the vast mines, which was definitely one for the rock-climbing purists! I personally wasn’t very competent but the experience of being in a completely new and alien environment was still fascinating.

The final day for me was the most enjoyable day as we attempted to do some sea traversing, a mixture of spider climbing round a jagged rock face and swimming through the ice-cold sea. It was fitting that the sun shone throughout our final day as we rounded off with an adventurous and ambitious 10+foot jump in to the sea.

Overall, as a group, I felt we bonded very well. At night the evenings would pass happily with lots of jovial banter and chat mixed with some enjoyable games provided by Jason and Jodie, which kept the mood up. In terms of teamwork and sticking together I thought we excelled, as there was lots of encouragement for people like myself who struggled at some tasks. Therefore overall I conclude that a good time was had by all on our residential week in North Wales, with some great food dished up for the veggies!

13th may 2013

My team and I from the princes Trust all went to Oakland’s on residential.

We took part in lots of outdoor activities including canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling, and going slate mining.

Some of the activities were hard and others were easy, some of the group struggled with some of the tasks and were afraid of water. In the evening we all made our own entertainment playing games and snacking on crisp and sweet and telling ghost stories. On our last night we had barbecue with sausages and burgers but we also had a vegetarian option because Darcy doesn’t eat meat. If we had the chance we would do it all again.

Start of the first day

Today I got up at 8 o’clock then walked to college and met all the group and we all sat down in the canteen. Then we seen Jason come with the mini buss and we got our bags and belongings and put them on the trailer. On the mini bus we were on our way then we hit the motor way to Wales and it didn’t take that long to get to the nearest McDonald’s. Then we ate it up and we were back on our way through the little country lanes. Then we arrived at TyCornel. Gethin and Jamie from Oakland’s greeted us. Then we got our bags in our room then we shot off to Oakland’s to get our kit. Then we got back on the mini bus the we went to an old iron mine. Then we walked up some hills and then we came to a point, the guys from Oakland’s tied some rope and some pulleys to a tree and then some of us were really keen to have a go but some of weren’t as keen but we all had a go and it wasn’t as worse expected. Then after all of us had done it, we had the chance to slide down the side of a waterfall and then we had a long gorge walk.

The Condition of our Local Neighbourhood

We are asking questions about the local area in Birkenhead, such as what people would like to see in the local area, which may include cleaner parks, more trees and more volunteers and youth clubs.
